Jamaica is warm in every month, so the real choice is not warm versus cold. It is rain, heat and storm risk, and how much of each you are happy to plan around. This guide sets out what each season looks like, where official sources agree, and how to match a time of year to the kind of retreat you want.
The short answer
The months outside Jamaica's two rainy seasons, roughly December through April, are the least likely to bring showers, and January and February are the coolest stretch on the coast. A good retreat is still possible in other months if you plan for showers, heat and the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June through the end of November.
What is the weather like in Jamaica through the year?
Jamaica is hot and humid all year, with temperatures that range from 19 °C (66 °F) to 32 °C (99 °F). That is the Jamaica Tourist Board's own description, and it adds that the island has two rainy seasons, May to June and September to November.
The Caribbean Regional Climate Centre describes a wet season from May to November with a drier break in July, often called the mid-summer drought. It also notes that January and February are about 3.5 °C cooler than July and August in coastal areas.
Daylight barely changes. The tourist board puts it at 11.5 to 12.5 hours a day year-round.
| Time of year | What to expect | What it means for a retreat |
|---|---|---|
| December to April | Outside both rainy seasons, with January and February the coolest stretch on the coast | Showers are less likely, which helps outdoor yoga and beach days |
| May to June | First rainy season; hurricane season opens in June | Workable with a rain plan; check the forecast before you travel |
| July and August | July is a drier break inside the wet season, and the coast runs about 3.5 °C warmer than in January and February; hurricane season continues | Plan practice for early morning and evening, and drink water often |
| September to November | Second rainy season; hurricane activity peaks around September 10 and is most frequent from mid-August to mid-October | More weather uncertainty; ask any host in writing about changes before you pay |
Is hurricane season a bad time for a yoga retreat in Jamaica?
Not automatically, but it adds uncertainty you should plan for. The National Hurricane Center lists the Atlantic season as running from June 1 to the end of November, with the peak around September 10 and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. The tourist board says hurricanes may pass over the island between June and November and asks visitors to keep an eye on the news.
A season that long does not mean storms all the time. It does mean storms can affect travel plans in those months. Three habits help:
- Watch the forecast in the week before you fly, and again when you land.
- Ask any host in writing what happens if the weather changes your dates.
- Check what your own travel insurance covers before you buy flights.
How much does it rain where the retreat is?
It depends heavily on the spot. The climate centre's profile gives annual rainfall of below 900 mm in drier south coast areas sheltered from moist winds, such as Kingston, and more than 4000 mm in the high elevations. It adds that the Blue Mountains shield part of the moisture from the southern lowlands.
The YAI Wellness Oasis sits on the coast at Pondside, Yallahs, St. Thomas, about 40 minutes from Kingston. We do not publish rainfall figures for that exact stretch of coast, so treat island-wide numbers as a guide only. Questions about the location are welcome on the Oasis page.
Which time of year suits a day, a weekend or a training?
The format matters as much as the month. Each one handles weather differently.
- A day visit. One Day For You is $99 per person, and a $25 deposit holds your spot. You pick your own arrival time, and you book one date, so it is the easiest format to fit around a forecast.
- A wellness weekend. Our weekends run on set dates, which means the season is chosen for you. Our upcoming weekends are Nov 20–22 · Dec 18–20, 2026, and the details are on the weekend retreats page.
- Teacher training. The 200-hour training runs for six weeks in person at the Oasis, so you will live through whatever the weather does in that window. See the current calendar on the teacher training page and read the guide to choosing a yoga retreat in Jamaica if you are still comparing options.
How do you stay comfortable in the heat and sun?
Plan for the sun every month, not only in summer. The CDC's Jamaica page warns that heat-related illness can be serious. Its advice is to eat and drink regularly, wear loose, lightweight clothing and limit hard activity in the hottest hours. It also recommends sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, protective clothing and shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and it points out that sunlight reflects off water and sand, which raises your exposure.
The FDA says to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, and more often if you are swimming or sweating. The CDC also lists dengue among the illnesses spread by mosquito bites and suggests a repellent with 20% or more DEET, or another listed active ingredient such as picaridin.
If you are pregnant, older, or live with a heart condition or other medical issue, talk to your doctor before booking a hot-weather retreat.
How do you choose your dates?
Work backwards from what bothers you most. A simple order:
- Pick the format first: one day, a weekend or a longer training.
- Decide what you mind least: heat, showers or storm uncertainty.
- Look at the dates we have posted, because weekends and trainings are set.
- Check the forecast a week out and again before you leave home.
- Ask any host, in writing, what happens if the weather turns before you pay a deposit.
