You have a day or two east of Kingston and a long list of places to fit in. This guide covers St. Thomas parish in south-east Jamaica, not St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. We are based at the YAI Wellness Oasis in Pondside, Yallahs, about 40 minutes from Kingston.

St. Thomas rewards a slower plan: a beach and a little history, a hot spring and a garden, or a river day with time left over.

The short answer: what are the best things to do in St. Thomas, Jamaica?

The best things to do in St. Thomas parish, Jamaica are Bath Fountain and Bath Botanical Garden, Morant Bay's 1865 heritage sites, Lyssons Beach, Reggae Falls, the Yallahs salt ponds and Morant Point Lighthouse. Group them along the coast road, leave room for winding inland roads, and take one or two days instead of rushing.

What is St. Thomas, Jamaica known for?

The hot spring, the 1865 history and a quieter south-east coast, with no resort-style itinerary to follow.

The parish is tied to the Morant Bay Rebellion. Stony Gut is the birthplace of National Hero Paul Bogle and the village where the rebellion began, according to the Jamaica Information Service's St. Thomas heritage guide. Give that history time and read the signs when you arrive.

What can you see from Yallahs to Morant Bay?

Coming from Kingston, start in Yallahs and head east. This first stretch gives you scenery, sea and history before the hill roads.

The twin salt ponds in Yallahs are worth a look. The Jamaica Gleaner reports that they have at times measured up to 15 times saltier than seawater and are believed to be linked to the 1692 earthquake (Jamaica Gleaner). Look from a safe spot and keep out of the water.

For a proper swim, go on to Lyssons Beach near Morant Bay, or to Bar Mouth Beach if you are with us for the day. The official Jamaica beach guide for Lyssons describes a cove with a shallow swim area and records that no lifeguard is on duty. Check the sea before you go in. Roselle Falls, nearby, is a short nature stop, and a swim there is not guaranteed.

What should you see in Morant Bay and Bath?

Morant Bay is the history stop and Bath is the spring-and-garden stop. They pair well, but give each its own time.

In Morant Bay, begin at the St. Thomas Parish Church and the 1865 Memorial Gardens. The church has a brick dated 1865 in its eastern wall, and the heritage record places the Morant Bay Fort and the rebellion here. Stony Gut is next if Paul Bogle's story is why you came.

Bath Fountain is a bathing experience. The Jamaica Information Service records that a man who had escaped slavery discovered the spring in the 1690s, and that hot and cold water from separate sources is mixed before it reaches the baths. Test the temperature with care and keep children close. If you are pregnant or managing a medical condition, ask a health professional first.

Bath Botanical Garden is an easy companion stop. The Ministry of Agriculture says it was established in 1779 and is the second-oldest garden in the Western Hemisphere, and that Captain William Bligh introduced breadfruit, ackee and Otaheite apple to Jamaica there in 1793 (Ministry of Agriculture).

Can you visit Reggae Falls and Morant Point in the same trip?

You can, but neither is a quick detour. With only one day, pick one.

Reggae Falls is an inland river stop in the Hillside district near Seaforth, and the National Library of Jamaica records "Dam Head" as its local name (National Library of Jamaica). Bring water shoes and dry clothes, and skip the swim if the water is moving fast, muddy or higher than expected.

Morant Point Lighthouse is the more ambitious choice, in the far east. The Jamaica Information Service says it was built in 1841, is the oldest lighthouse on the island and is a National Monument. Ask locally about current access and plan to be back in daylight. We give no driving time because the final approach can change.

A Blue Mountains outing is a separate trip. Arrange current local guidance first, and keep it off a day full of coastal stops.

How many days do you need in St. Thomas, Jamaica?

One day covers a focused coast-and-Bath route. Take two if you want a river, the far east or a slower beach morning.

For one day from Kingston:

  1. Start in Yallahs and look at the twin salt ponds.
  2. Continue to Morant Bay for the parish church and 1865 Memorial Gardens.
  3. Choose Lyssons Beach or Bar Mouth Beach for a swim and a rest.
  4. Go to Bath Fountain and Bath Botanical Garden.
  5. Turn back before you are tired, and do not add an inland river stop at the last minute.

For two days:

  1. Day one: Yallahs, Morant Bay, Lyssons and Bath. Stay overnight in the parish.
  2. Day two: choose Reggae Falls, Morant Point or a guided mountain outing. Leave space for weather and road conditions.

If you would rather not spend the day driving, spend it at the YAI Wellness Oasis in Yallahs. Our One Day For You experience includes a welcome drink, a pond-side hike, jog or run, Bar Mouth Beach, Rope Wall and Aerial Hammocks, a meal and drink, an Ocean View Villa tour, personal time and a bonfire. It is $99 per person with a $25 deposit, and you choose your arrival time. Our founder, Subhadra, calls the Rope Wall "suspended between the mountain and the sea."

What should you bring, and is swimming safe?

Bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent, a change of clothes, water shoes and cash in small notes. Finish rural drives in daylight when you can.

Our ocean safety notice applies here: the ocean may be deep and conditions can change without warning. Non-swimmers are strongly advised not to enter. Never swim alone, supervise children at all times, and stay out of the sea in rough conditions, strong currents or bad weather. Use the same judgment at rivers and falls.

Frequently asked questions

Is St. Thomas, Jamaica worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy history, springs, beaches and rural scenery more than nightlife or large resorts.

Is St. Thomas, Jamaica the same as St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands?

No. St. Thomas in Jamaica is a parish east of Kingston. St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands is a separate island in another country, so check the destination before booking transport or accommodation.

Can you swim at Bath Fountain?

Bath Fountain is for bathing rather than swimming, and the spring is hot at its source. Test the water, follow the local facility's instructions and get medical advice first if pregnancy or a health condition makes heat a concern.

How do you get to Reggae Falls?

Reggae Falls is in Hillside near Seaforth, and "Dam Head" is a local name for it. Use current local directions and allow extra time for inland roads. Stay out of the river if you are alone or it has rained heavily.

How far is St. Thomas from Kingston?

The YAI Wellness Oasis in Yallahs is about 40 minutes from Kingston by road. The whole parish takes longer, and Bath, Reggae Falls and Morant Point each need separate planning.
